The Chiropractic Meaning of Life

From The Chiropractic Textbook by R.W. Stephenson, 1927

Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all the properties and actions. The expression of this intelligence through matter is the Chiropractic meaning of life; therefore life is necessarily the union of intelligence and matter. Force unites intelligence and matter. Universal Intelligence gives force to both inorganic and organic matter.

That force which Universal gives to organic matter as a higher order of its manifestations, is called Innate Intelligence.  The mission of Innate Intelligence is to maintain the material of the body of the organic unit in active organization. It does this by adapting the forces of universal, (which as physical laws are unswerving and unadapted and have no solicitude for matter) so they can be used in the body; so that all parts will have co-ordinated action, thus every part has mutual benefit.

This work of Innate is entirely Mental. For this reason the forces of Innate never injure or destroy the tissues. The forces of Innate are mental for they are far superior to physical forces, because they control physical forces.

This assembling of universal forces is called Creation, for they have definite form and purpose, eventually.

The headquarters of Innate’s control, in the body, is the brain, and the definite unit of this is called Brain Cell.  From the brain cell as a unit, Innate controls a unit of matter.

In the brain cell as a physical workshop of material, Innate Transforms the mental force into a definite unit, for a given tissue cell, for a given moment.

This specific force, when transformed, is a force which is either a physical energy or a form that controls or sets into action, physical energies. It is called Mental Impulse.

The departure of the mental impulse from the brain cell is called  Propulsion.  If it is like a physical energy, it requires effort. The forces of Innate Intelligence operate through or over the nervous system.

That which has efferent direction and which conducts the mental impulse is called Efferent Nerve.

Since the physical energies can suffer interruption in their transmission, in a like manner, the forces of Innate can suffer interference with transmission; and that is the basis for the existence of Chiropractic. This comparison, also, is the basis of some theories, which contend that the mental impulse is a physical force and therefore subject to the same laws as any other physical force; but it should always be remembered that these physical energies are in the  adapted form  (if this theory is used) and therefore not injurious to tissue as electricity would be. The conveyance of the mental impulse over the efferent nerve is Transmission.

Over this route of specialized material the mental impulse travels to Tissue Cell where it is Received, whereupon the mental conception of Innate, as to what that cell should be or how it should act, comes to pass. That which was only mental, now becomes a physical fact.

It shows by its very character that an intelligence planned the form or the action, and this evidence of intelligence is called Expression; meaning the coming forth through matter; the showing of intelligence. Things which show this are said to be alive and such expression is called life.

The character of this action is determined by the character of the tool used by Innate to express herself, therefore the purpose or the action of this tool which is the tissue cell, is Function.  The function of matter is to express force. In the tissue cell, which is a specific kind of matter, the specific forces of Innate are expressed in a specific manner by an instrument built for the particular kind of expression.

The prompt and correct action of that tissue cell, being actuated by Innate’s specific force in harmony with all other cells, is called Coordination.  In this, we see the working of the law of cause and effect, and that every process requires time.

In order to perform its function, the tissue cell has motion, both molecular and as a whole cell. This movement is called  Vibration.

These vibrations give off physical forces which are impressed upon the afferent nerve as a form of force called Impression.

These impressions are transmitted over the Afferent Nerve.

This Transmission  is similar to transmission in the efferent half of the cycle, for the forces are similar.

When it reaches the afferent  Brain Cell,  it is  Received much in the same manner as the tissue cell receives, for brain cell is a tissue cell, after all.

When this force has reached brain cell, it is immediately admitted into the Mental realm by Mental Interpretation.

The product of this act of interpretation by Innate is a Sensation.

When Innate has a number of sensations, she has a correct image of the condition of the tissue cell and this is named Ideation. Ideation can be the possession of nothing but intelligence.

The intelligence in the body, of course, is Innate Intelligence.

When Innate Intelligence knows what the tissue cell needs, she plans ways and means to make it adapt to its environmental conditions and the mental process of doing this is Intellectual Adaptation.

The great source of supply from which Innate draws her forces is UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE.   `

The Discovery of Chiropractic as told by D.D. Palmer, its founder.

Palmer-DD-chiropractorIn the dim ages of the past when man lived in rude huts and rocky eaves, even up to the present time, he resorted to charms, necromancy and witchcraft for the relief of mental and physical suffering. His whole object was to find an antidote, a specific for each and every ailment which could and would drive out the intruder, as though the disorder was a creature of intelligence. In his desire to free himself from affliction and prolong his existence, he has searched the heavens above, he has gone into the deep blue sea, the bowels of the earth and every portion thereof. He has tried animal and mineral poisons, penetrated the dark forest with superstitious rite and with incantations, has gathered herbs, barks and roots for medicinal use. In his frenzy for relief, trusting that he might find a panacea, or at least a specific, he has slaughtered man, beast and bird, making use of their various parts alive and dead. He has made powders, ointments, pills, elixirs, decoctions, tinctures and lotions of all known vegetables and crawling creatures which could be found, giving therefor his reasons according to his knowledge.

One question was always uppermost in my mind in my search for the cause of disease. I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench, was not. Why? What difference was there in the two persons that caused one to have pneumonia, catarrh, typhoid or rheumatism, while his partner, similarly situated, escaped? Why? This question had worried thousands for centuries and was answered in September, 1895.

Harvey Lillard, a janitor, in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced. the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing “crude” about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it.

If no other discovery had been made, this, of itself, should have been hailed with delight. It was the key which has ultimately unlocked the secrets of functional metabolism; it is the entering wedge destined to split the therapeutical log of superstition wide open, revealing its irrational and ignorant construction.

Shortly after this relief from deafness, I had a case of heart trouble which was not improving. I examined the spine and found a displaced vertebra pressing against the nerves which innervate the heart. I adjusted the vertebra and gave immediate relief — nothing “accidental” or “crude” about this. Then I began to reason if two diseases, so dissimilar as deafness and heart trouble, came from impingement, a pressure on nerves, were not other disease due to a similar cause? Thus the science (knowledge) and art (adjusting) of Chiropractic were formed at that time. I then began a systematic investigation for the cause of all diseases and have been amply rewarded.

I founded Chiropractic on Osteology, Neurology and FunctionsÑbones, nerves and the manifestations of impulses. I originated the art of adjusting vertebrae and the knowledge of every principle which is included in the construction of the science of Chiropractic.

The amount of nerve tension determines health or disease. In health there is normal tension, known as tone, the normal activity, strength and excitability of the various organs and functions as observed in a state of health. The kind of disease depends upon what nerves are too tense or too slack.

Functions performed in a normal manner and amount result in health. Diseases are conditions resulting from either an excess or deficiency of functionating.

The dualistic system — spirit and body — united by intellectual life — the soul — is the basis of this science of biology, and nerve tension is the basis of functional activity in health and disease.

Spirit soul and body compose the being, the source of mentality. Innate and Educated, two. mentalities, look after the welfare of the body physically and its surrounding environments.

Chiropractors correct abnormalities of the intellect as well as those of the body.

These discoveries and their development into a well-defined science are worth more to the student, practitioner and those desiring health, than all the therapeutical methods combined.

I am the originator, the Fountain Head of the essential principle that disease is the result of too much or not enough functionating. I created the art of adjusting vertebrae, using the spinous and transverse processes as levers, and named the mental act of accumulating knowledge, the cumulative function, corresponding to the physical vegetative function — growth of intellectual and physical — together, with the science, art and philosophy — Chiropractic. It is now being followed, more or less, by 2,000 Chiropractors, and its use is being attempted by several other methods. It was I who combined the science and art and developed the principles thereof. I have answered the time-worn question — what is life?

The Chiropractic Oath by B.J. Palmer

“I am a CBJ Palmerhiropractor working with the sciences of the universe by turning on the life in man through the art of the adjustment. I do not prescribe, treat or diagnose conditions. I use only my hands. I work with

that ‘mysterious something’ which created my body from two cells. At a time prescribed aeons ago I was set in this body to experience. That cosmic power which created me, which also moves the seas, rotates the earth, directs the heavens, gives life, takes it away, is everything. And that power which set the universe in motion and created me did not abandon me when I became free of the security of my earthly mother’s womb. It is still with me and protects me as it moves all forms toward their final predestined goal. It is not mine to educatedly ask ‘why’ or ‘where’, but to innately live; and live to help my fellow creatures. And with this Chiropractic adjustment I use all the powers and energies moving this universe, to allow my fellow creatures the chance to live, free of dis-ease. I wish nothing in return, only the chance to GIVE. I give with the only thing I have, LOVE. And I love all by removing that which interferes with 100% LIFE. I do not look to others for direction, I look within. I am a perfect expression of God living 24 hours each day for others. I am a PRINCIPLED CHIROPRACTOR.”

The Truth by B.J. Palmer

We chiropracDD-palmertors work with the subtle substance of the soul. We release the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulet of force, that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells, and stirs them into life. We deal with the magic power that transforms common food into living, loving, thinking clay; that robes the earth with beauty, and hues and scents the flowers with the glory of the air.

In the dim, dark, distant long ago, when the sun first bowed to the morning star, this power spoke and there was life; it quickened the slime of the sea and the dust of the earth and drove the cell to union with its fellows in countless living forms. Through eons of time it finned the fish and winged the bird and fanged the beast. Endlessly it worked, evolving its form until it produced the crowning glory of them all. With tireless energy it blows the bubble of each individual life and then silently, relentlessly dissolves the form, and absorbs the spirit into itself again.

And yet you ask, ? Can Chiropractic cure appendicitis or the flu?? Have you more faith in a knife or a spoonful of medicine than in the power that animates the living world?

Healing Process of the Heart #5: Affirmation

At this point, the healing experience has become a very real and integral part of your life.  It is no longer something that you desperately seek nor is it a new idea in your consciousness.  Through all that you have experienced, you have come to realize that healing is not something that someone must do to you or the consequence of any specific action, therapy, or diet program, but is instead an aspect of life that never stops, never leaves, and is your constant companion.  You no longer need affirmations to remind you of its presence, and you no longer must visualize your healing vision.  These affirmations become your constant inner dialogue and your visualizations never leave your mind’s eye.

You have read the books, you have studied the words, you have followed the instructions, and now it has become as familiar to you as breathing, eating, and sleeping.  Healing is not something that somebody does to you, or even something that you do to yourself.  It is merely something that you do, just as your heart beats and your lungs breath.  You now understand, through your own experience and your daily increase of awareness, perception, and consciousness, that healing is not simply the relief of symptoms and remission of disease, but the constant process of growth, evolution, and learning.  As your perception continues to become more refined, and your ability to respond more appropriately to changes in your outer and inner environment becomes more effective and efficient, learning and growing become more of your regular daily experience.  You begin to more effectively manifest physically your intentions, more harmoniously interact with others, and experience greater levels of contentment, joy, and peace.  Your disease, condition, or other expression of disharmony that once caused you so much distress, no longer holds a place in your consciousness and is seen as a consequence or effect of past causes (thoughts, words, and actions.)  Instead, your consciousness is filled with your vision and you begin to witness the universal principles, which were once fantastic, and perhaps fictitious, concepts in your daily life.

You have emerged into the Process of the Heart called Affirmation.  In this stage of healing, your encounter with every moment of every day reminds you of and affirms the truths, principles, and laws that govern the universe. You no longer need to remind yourself of these things, for the universe begins to speak to you through life.

As such, your language begins to change.  You find that you no longer speak of lack or detriment, but instead spread only words of wisdom, healing, and truth.  Your affirmations flow from you as natural as your regional dialect and cultural slang.  You have freed yourself from the prison of false beliefs, denial, and doubt, and have become one of the few who sees through rose-colored glasses and always has a cup that is half-full, rather than half-empty.

As you observe yourself in this constant state of affirmation and allow yourself to receive the voice of the universe through everything you see, everything you hear, and everyone you meet, you greet all experience with open arms and realize that we are all one.

Healing Process of the Heart #3: Acceptance

Once you have become aware of a change within you or your environment, and you have acknowledged its presence as an aspect of yourself and an integral part of the healing process, you can begin to let go of the anger, sadness, or fear you may be experiencing and accept the situation for what it is.  If you can do this with the attitude of “what is…is,” much of the anxiety and apprehension you feel will begin to dissipate and be replaced with calm and security.

One of the greatest stories of the power of acceptance is the story of Victor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning and survivor of the Holocaust.  Victor Frankl was a prisoner in the Auschwitz death camps during the Nazi occupation of World War II.  Surrounded by the smell of burning bodies and the sounds of children’s screams, Victor found himself in an experience where death was certain.  One day, Victor was taken to a dark room in the basement of a burnt out building, so that the “doctors” could give him a “routine checkup”.  Before he knew it, he was strapped to a table and the men began sterilization surgery on him…without anesthesia.  As he was laying on the table in excruciating agony, he had a realization.  Whereas these men had the liberty to go where they please and do what they wish, they did not have the freedom to think for themselves.  They were puppets of a dark master, of which they must perform such horrible acts upon another human being.  Although they had freedom, he had the liberty to create in his mind whatever picture he desired and think his own thoughts.  With this sudden insight, he accepted  his situation and began spending all his time with his eyes closed imagining himself running through green fields with his children and grandchildren.  He saw himself being free of the horrible place he currently resided and traveling to America to share his story and newfound wisdom.

Victor Frankl did survive the death camps.  He traveled to America and wrote his book, which has been a source of inspiration for millions of readers.  If Victor had not accepted his situation, he would have suffered through his experience and probably never survived.  By accepting his appalling circumstance and creating a new vision within his mind, Victor Frankl not only lived through it, but healed himself in the process and helped millions of people around the world to accept their situation and heal as well.

In the next entry, we will explore the fourth “Healing Process of the Heart” – Appreciation.
